The Body Is Not a Thing

In the thick of menopause, three women question everything they’ve been told about aging to find new narratives in unlikely places.

“The menopausal woman,” writes feminist author Germaine Greer, “is the prisoner of a stereotype and will not be rescued from it until she has begun to tell her own story.”

“The Body Is Not a Thing” is a story about menopause. It’s a film that explores the power of culture to impact our experience of our bodies and how crafting new narratives can heal and free us. Our guides are three women in the thick of this transition, women who are questioning the stories they’ve been told about what it means to be an aging woman and finding the tools to shape alternate visions in unlikely places.

This film is currently in pre-production, with support from the Southern Documentary Fund. The video below offers a taste of conversations we’ve had with women on menopause and aging and how it’s transformed their bodies, their perspectives and their relationships.

“Recipients of the SDF Emergency R&D Grants include a diverse group of filmmakers across the Southern states, with more than half of the awards going to emerging makers. The themes of these Southern stories encompass social justice, income inequality, immigration, and the pandemic that is sweeping our country.”
